There are a number of causes when it comes to pain. The good news is that many causes of foot pain can be treated at home. However, if the pain is persistent or severe, then it may warrant a visit to your doctor to assess the pain.
Foot pain and Common Causes
The most common causes of foot pain include:
- Sprains or strains
- Blisters, calluses or corns
- Ingrown toenails
- Injuries to the Achilles Tendon
- Objects embedded into the foot
- Bones that are broken or cracked in the foot
When uric acid builds up in the joints, it causes gout, which is a form of arthritis. Gout can cause severe pain, swelling, redness and warmth in joints that are affected. The attacks can last a few days, and are most often around the big toe on the foot. The problem with gout is that it is often mistaken for a bunion. To treat this pain utilize ice packs and through taking non-inflammatory drugs. You may also need to talk with your doctor about further treatment to ensure that this does not happen again
Blisters, Calluses, and Corns
When the shoes fit poorly, this can damage the skin. This damage can cause:
- Blisters which are small areas of fluid that built up on the outer layer of the skin
- Corns are small circles of thick skin
- Calluses are rough and hard areas of skin that are often yellow in color
These particular conditions can cause discomfort when walking and pain. Blisters often heal themselves within a few days. If you adjust your shoes to those that are more comfortable, this can help with the pain. For corns and calluses, you often have to see a doctor to find out the best form of treatment.
Cracked or Broken Bones
Usually, a severe injury is what causes a broken or cracked bone in the foot. In other cases, repeated behavior such as participating in high impact sports can cause these fractures. For those who are older, osteoporosis can cause the bones to become cracked or broken. Any bone that is in your foot can be broken or cracked, including the bones that are located in the middle of the foot, the heel, toes, ankles and bones along the lower leg.
When this is the case, the area will be very painful, tender to the touch and the area may be bruised. You will want to stop what you are doing and avoid stressing the area anymore until you can see a medical professional.
